How to have a smooth family photo session
In preparation for your upcoming family photo session, I wanted to share some tips to help you and your family prepare and make the session go smoother.
As a mom of two, children, I completely understand the stress of preparing for family photos. First, you must try to find suitable clothes, work together and fit everyone properly. Then there is getting everyone to the location on time, clean and happy. It seems like an impossible task, right? But, let me tell you, it's all possible with some previous preparation.
So, here are several tips to help you alleviate some of that stress and make the process smoother:
Try and eat 1 hour before you leave.
Have you ever tried to negotiate with a hungry child? If your kids are like mine, that is, growing and constantly eating, it is nearly impossible to get through them when hungry. I always suggest eating an hour before leaving to avoid unnecessary tears and distractions. Depending on the time of your session, this might be on the latter side. So it doesn't mean you have to eat dinner at this time but provide your family with a filling snack or small meal.
Select everyone's outfits ahead of time, not on the same day as your session.
One of the best ways to minimize stress is to decide what you want your family to wear a few days before. By doing this, you will know well in advance if something doesn't fit right or coordinate with the rest of the family's outfits. It also gives you time to pick anything you might need, like a hat or pair of shoes.
If kids get hungry, you want to have dry snacks.
It's always good to have some snacks on hand for children. You want to minimize the mess or any stains in their outfit as much as possible. Therefore, the snacks must be dry. Some examples are arrowroot cookies, goldfish crackers, or bear paws. It's better to have the snacks available, just in case. They are easy to clean up and wipe off.
Having a nap later in the day.
If you have little ones that still nap, I suggest having them sleep a little later than usual. Napping keeps them rested and refreshed for your photoshoot. If they nap too early, there is a chance that they will become tired once the session begins. I don't think children need to smile for every photo, but I believe they should have fun - this can be hard if they are tired.
Try not to stress about the small things. I know it's easier said than done.
Suppose your child wants to bring their favorite stuffy - who cares! If they refuse to put on fancy shoes -don't worry! These are small details that don't matter in the end. When you look back on your photos, you won't care about anything other than the love captured!
